The new film, “Alienoid” is a South Korean fantasy and science fiction action movie. Written and directed by Choi Dong-hoon (who brought us “The Thieves” a few years ago), the film follows the formula of spending a lot of money on the production as well as the cast but yielding mixed results.
The story is convoluted and I don’t give away plot points in my reviews, anyway. It however looks spectacular. When this played in the theaters, I’m sure it had the visual impact to help audiences overlook the confusing storyline.
There definitely seems to be a trend for South Korean blockbuster style films to be lavish eye candy, with lengthy runtimes to boot. I would love to see a film that is less than two hours (90 minutes would be a major surprise) that actually tells a solid story with equally eye dazzling special effects and solid characterization. The South Korean filmmakers are following what the US and others have been doing with long runtimes (just look at the latest two blockbusters from the U.S. as examples). I hope we don’t see three plus hour films from other countries.
Overall, “Alienoid” is fun to look at but it’s lacking in the substance department.
